The pretty little town on the edge of the East Devon National Landscape

KINGFISHER INN
This is a proper locals’ local. You’ll get a warm welcome and homecooked meals that can be
eaten in the bar, restaurant or in the pretty garden. The menu includes pub classics, such
as scampi and chips, quiche of the day, burgers, jacket potatoes and sandwiches.
Hearty Sunday roasts with all the trimmings are a favourite around here.

REBEL, REBEL
Colyton is documented as being ‘the most rebellious town in Devon’ because it supplied
more men than any other town during the Duke of Monmouth’s rebellion against the new
Catholic King James II in 1685.
More than 100 men from Colyton joined the so-called Pitchfork Rebellion. Things didn’t end well, thanks to the retribution of the infamous ‘Bloody’ Judge Jeffreys.

FRESH FARE
The Bear Bread Bakery & Kitchen serves irresistible sourdough loaves, Danish pastries and doughnuts, as well as breakfast and brunch. There are three B&B rooms above the bakery, just to make sure you get the full experience.
The delicious aroma of freshly baked goods wafting up the stairs could prove too much to
‘bear’. You won’t leave hungry.

TOP TRADES
Colyton is home to some expert tradesmen. Local firm J&FJ Baker is Britain’s only remaining
traditional oak bark tannery.
There is also a wheelwright in town. Gregory Rowland of Mike Rowland & Son Wheelwrights & Coachbuilders was recently appointed the MBE for his highly skilled work. The company has held a Royal Warrant since 2005.
