We are lucky to have two national parks in our county, we even have two others on our borders in the form of the Lake District and the Peak District. We’re not going to ask you which one you prefer between the two, that’s an impossible question. Instead we’d like to celebrate how great they both are.
When it comes to status as a designated national park, the North York Moors is actually the older of the two, officially gaining status in 1952. There are dozens of locations of locations for you to visit. Helmsley is a popular market town that’s great for food and shopping, Roseberry Topping is a popular place for walkers, while Sutton Bank has arguably one of the finest views in the country. There are even some pretty coastal villages such as Staithes and Robin Hood’s Bay within the boundaries.
The Yorkshire Dales gained its national park status in 1954 and after the 2016 extension, is now almost 50% larger than the North York Moors at 841 sq mi.
The Yorkshire Dales is home to the famous three peaks, countless waterfalls and a natural phenomenon in the form of Malham Cove. The most famous of the dales is arguably Wensleydale, famous for its cheese but the surrounding dales of Swaledale, Wharfedale and Dentdale are popular locations for visitors throughout the year. On the southern edge of the dales, Bolton Abbey is the location of a 12th-century Augustinian monastery and the market town of Skipton is known as the ‘Gateway to the Dales’.
