Grand Seiko have recently unveiled the new Evolution 9 collection – a series of technologically advanced watches infused with the deep traditions of Japan. “The number nine is considered to be particularly auspicious within Japanese culture,” shares Peter.
“Nine in Japanese is pronounced ‘kyu,’ with its own kanji symbol. However, a different kanji symbol with the same ‘kyu’ pronunciation and translates as ‘the ultimate’. The new collection is greatly inspired by this extraordinary link, and embodies the watchmaker’s ambition to balance legibility, durability and beauty.”
2. Contemporary Japanese designs
Drawing from the deep roots of harmony and balance that permeate all aspects of Japanese culture, watchmaking artisans create exquisite, contemporary pieces imbued with a distinguished heritage. Since the creation of the original Grand Seiko in 1960, every subsequent piece has taken direct inspiration from this classic design whilst expanding the creative horizon.

3. Masterfully fashioned timepieces
In order to consistently create marvellous watches, Grand Seiko require craftspeople who have truly mastered their profession and still strive for perfection. Takumi artisans are individuals who have honed their skills to a razor-sharp point, over the course of at least 25 years. Using their comprehensive knowledge of watchmaking, these dedicated artisans always discover new inspirations and innovations.
“The interplay between shadow and light holds a place of reverence within Japanese culture, and the artisans of Grand Seiko take great care to uphold this balance in their work,” explains Peter.
“Takumi artisans are craftsmen and women who are unrivalled in their particular field. They have spent many years honing their skills and apply an extremely high level of expertise to watchmaking.”
“Zeratsu polishing is an excellent example of these traditional techniques, and how they increase the quality and sophistication of Grand Seiko watches. The timepieces and their cases are finely polished to create a brilliant, distortion-free mirrored finish using this distinctive method.”
