From science to Roman ruins: a small selection of outdoor museums across Sussex to visit
When the sun is shining and the kids are off school, where better to head than an outdoor museum? We round up 5 to visit in Sussex.
Weald and Downland Open Air Museum
With more than 50 buildings to explore, discover the stories of people who lived and worked in this part of the world for the past 1,000 years. The museum is of course family-friendly, and your canine friends are welcome too!
Amberley Museum
Dedicated to the industrial heritage of the south east, this is a great day out for transport geeks - there's a heritage bus and a narrow gauge railway track providing transport around the site.
Observatory Science Centre
Get hands-on with telescopes, planets and observatory domes, plus enjoy the outdoor science parks where kids can learn about force, movement, sound and the power of water.
Newhaven Fort
Run along the ramparts of this Victorian fort, fire imaginary cannons out to sea and explore the vast echoing tunnels built into the chalk cliffs. Indoors there's a Blitz shelter simulation and a military museum.
Bignor Roman Villa
Walk through the Downland fields where Roman ruins were discovered by a farmer in 1811 and admire the beautiful mosaic floors.
