The White Bricks of Woolpit
For at least two centuries, the brick kilns of Woolpit were celebrated for their white bricks. Woolpit Museum has records going back over 400 years which show that the distinctive Woolpit white bricks were exported worldwide. It is even thought that the first White House in America was constructed of Woolpit bricks. Soon after the railways reached Suffolk in the mid-19th century, Woolpit and Elmswell were linked by a tramway used to transport bricks from the Woolpit brick kilns to Elmswell station for onward transportation to the rest of Suffolk and beyond.
