Bury St Edmunds has a new casual food and drink venue to add to the town’s already impressive choice of dining options

The Tavern, a bar and restaurant on St John's Street, is the brainchild of Craig and Julie Nichols, with partners Andrew and Diana Grant.

Their aim is to create a welcoming, fun environment with sharing plates, social dining, local and craft beers, fine wines and cocktails.

A freehouse, The Tavern's main bitter is Adnams Southwold. Also on offer are Otter Bitter, eight cellar beers, craft beers in cans, such as Beavertown Neck Oil, and Moretti in bottles and on draft.

The cocktails menu has a choice of 10 locally themed mixes, with names such as The Abbeygate Mojito, and a Turbo G&T, which combines pink peppercorn gin, tonic and locally made F+E nitro cold brew coffee.

Food is served from noon to 9pm (4pm Sundays) and from 11am on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The menu is designed to enable customers to mix and match to create their desired meal.

Choose from lamb shawarma - slow cooked lamb shoulder on flatbread - buttermilk chicken strips with blue cheese dip, barbecue ribs, chicken croquetas and lamb koftas, and stone-baked pizzas.

Seafood includes salt and pepper squid, pan-fried chilli and garlic prawns, herb baked queenie scallops and deep-fried cod cheeks.

Vegetarian and vegan options include spicy falafel, tandoori vegetable skewers, spring onion bhaji and aubergine salad.

The Tavern will also be featuring live music on Friday nights, and other music events are planned.
