Dunster, in West Somerset, is a captivating blend of medieval history and natural beauty. Dominated by the historic Dunster Castle, the village boasts charming cobbled streets and traditional stone cottages. With beautifully preserved medieval architecture and proximity to Exmoor National Park, Dunster offers visitors a unique glimpse into England's rich past while providing a serene and scenic escape in the heart of the countryside.

This area of Somerset houses a lot of provisions from the Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership, with Minehead having The Beach Gym which engages with a fantastic amount of physical activity on referral, helping people living with health conditions to become more active in a safe and structured environment.

Alongside this we also have our health walks in Minehead which boast excellent numbers each and every walk, creating a strong sense of community in the seaside town. This is hardly surprising as West Somerset is a walker’s paradise, providing a journey through some of England's most stunning and varied landscapes, with both challenging hikes and leisurely strolls in an unspoiled setting.

Today’s walk takes us through the village of Dunster, starting at the Dunster Steep Car Park - TA24 6AS. This walk has many variations, our route today can be easily adapted to suit your wants and needs – even detouring down to Dunster Beach if you’re up for it – but this starting point is perfect as you have a variety of refreshments nearby as well as toilets. This route has a variety of different terrains, if it has been particularly wet I would look to wear appropriate walking shoes.

1. From here, head away from the road through a gate and you will see the National Trust car park, walk up there and on the left you will see a gated entrance to a field. The first part of the walk then becomes simple, keep venturing on this path with the castle always on your right, cross the river via the bridge and continue on until you see another opportunity to cross the water.

2. This route gives you the opportunity to stroll back into the village, exploring the architecture along the cobbled streets via Mill Gardens, Mill Lane and back onto the main road through. Pursue this road until you see a footpath entrance to Dunster Castle grounds, more toilets can be found here as well as a ‘Dream Garden’ with a wonderful history, after being brought back to life in 2014.

3. Join back onto the main road and explore the village a little more, passing the iconic Yarn Market, a relic of its once-thriving wool trade. On the left-hand side, you will spot a path leading to a road called ‘The Ball’. Continue straight and once you’ve gone through the gate you should spot an Orchard on your left.

4. Keep on this grassy path until you reach Butter Cross just before a road, not in its original site from the 14th or 15th century but an ancient monument steeped in history all the same. Here you can turn right onto another public footpath where you can get a view of Minehead.

5. This next turning on this path may be a little tricky to spot, if you hit the road again you’ve gone too far. But on your right halfway down this path is a gap in the hedge line leading to a path in Conygar Woods, proceed in the same direction and keep your eyes peeled for the wonderful wildlife that surrounds the area. Soon you will see a sign that says Conygar Tower ¼ mile, this will be where you turn off but it’s worth having a look at the tower to finish the trail. Where you saw the previous sign, head back there to turn out of the woods and you will find yourself right back at the car park.
