Harvest
Harvest opened in Bath in 1971, selling organic grocery, ethically sourced vegetarian and vegan natural products, with a refill service for staples and a popular on-site deli. The team aim to provide a welcoming and ethical alternative to the big-name supermarket shopping environment.
The original founders were inspired by the "back to the land" and wholefood movements that were emerging at the time. Fast forward fifty years and it is now a co-operative: the Bath shop, along with a Harvest in Bristol, is the retail arm of the Essential Trading Co-operative Ltd, a manufacturer and wholesaler of ethically assured, healthy and fairly-traded products, with over 100 passionate and committed members.
Ceres Natural Foods
Ceres Natural Foods was founded in 1977 by Peter Jenkins, starting as a market stall before securing premises in Princes Street in Yeovil.
The shop has a clear vision, stated in its mission ‘to empower those we reach to attain and maintain exceptional health and wellbeing.’ Alongside providing wholefoods, organic fruit and vegetables and grocery essentials, there are ranges for homeopathy, aromatherapy and flower essences. The store and staff have won multiple awards for their product knowledge, providing professional advice in homeopathic remedies and specific dietary needs. They are also busy expanding a range of ‘make-your-own’ ingredients, for customers to blend their own herbal remedies, lotions and potions.
The Good Earth Natural Foods
This health food supermarket is part of The Good Earth business in Wells which also includes a local vegetarian restaurant and a gift and homeware shop.
The Good Earth Natural Foods is conveniently positioned on the edge of one of the city’s car parks, so ideal for buying bulky kitchen cupboard essentials. It provides organic, local and natural products, from vegetables to pulses, toiletries to cleaning products. The shop has evolved over its 40 years of trading to meet customer demands. There is now a dedicated refill room to fulfil a zero-waste policy.

Earthfare
Earthfare is a family-owned business which opened in 2000 in Glastonbury. In 2009 it moved into the large premises left vacant by Woolworths and has been a community hub ever since.
This award-winning organic and local supermarket has an emphasis on sustainability and has just gone solar. You can really do your weekly shop here, with a wide range of essential groceries, plastic-free fruit and vegetables, eggs, dairy (along with a range of 40 different plant milks). Shopping will soon be available online, although visiting the shop provides the benefits of experts on hand to give advice on nutrition and supplements and a deli counter at the rear of the shop.
Toucan Wholefoods
A trip to Toucan Wholefoods in Minehead is more of a day out. Not only can you do your weekly shop of organic and locally sourced products, including fruit and vegetables and store cupboard essentials, but you can take a break at the café on the first floor. Everything is made in-house with many daily specials including soups, curries, quiches and salad bowls plus freshly baked cakes.
Back on the shop floor, there is a vast range of health supplements with a fully qualified senior nutritional therapist who can advise customers. Meanwhile, the Wellness Clinic on the second floor offers a range of holistic treatments including massage, reflexology, crystal healing and allergy testing.
Frome Wholefoods
The shop opened in 1987 in Frome and was bought by Elmer Barrett and Lucia Snell in 2016, who have since worked hard to ensure it is a real part of the community.
Frome Wholefoods has an ethos of being local, organic, ethical and fair trade, with the priority of providing good wholesome food first and foremost. But they also sell homeopathic remedies, essential oils, natural remedies, household items and offers refills. They pride themselves on fair pricing, offering discounts on bulk items and cases ordered in advance. There is an ordering system for regular orders and bulk items with a free of charge, electric trike delivery service on hand.
