Market Place Cafe
Ideally situated on the corner of the Market Place, this café opened its doors in 1991, with Jane Shakespeare bringing her cookery flair to the city. In 2000 her sister Wendy joined the business and took over the day-to-day running of the café, followed by another sister, Debra in 2004.
Having operated from the first floor for 20 years, in 2011 the café expanded and moved downstairs which is where it can be found today, with tables and chairs spilling into the Market Place on warm days.
This family-run business provides home cooked, no-nonsense food with traditional breakfast offerings and a wide-ranging lunch menu, from sandwiches and paninis to lasagne and fish & chips made on the premises in the kitchen which remains on the first floor. ‘I change the menu twice a year,’ says Debra. ‘We make most things from scratch, including chutneys, sauces, soups, quiche, meat pies and all our jacket potato fillings. I also make approximately 90 per cent of the cakes.’ It’s also a great stop for an ice cream, serving Marshfields Farm Ice Cream in a variety of their best-selling flavours as well as a soft scoop ice cream.
Throughout the summer, evening meals are also provided by FeastCircle on Friday and Saturday nights. This popular pop-up restaurant run by chef Tariq Nasir brings an authentic taste of the Middle East to Wells and it’s a great way to make the most of the café’s location during the summer.
