Sadler Street is becoming something of a gourmet destination for the city. A new restaurant recently opened which champions local suppliers and producers, with a ‘more veg, less meat’ ethos.

Root Wells is the sister restaurant to the popular Root Bristol, owned by Josh Eggleton, Luke Hasell, Head Chef Rob Howell and his wife Megan. ‘I grew up in Wells and started my career at Goodfellows,’ says Rob. ‘I moved back three years ago and had been looking for a second site following the success of Root Bristol. When this one came up, it just was too perfect not to go for it.’

The menu is still vegetable led, with sharing platters, although there is always meat and fish on the menu. ‘Root Wells is an extension of Root Bristol for sure’, continues Rob. ‘It is the same concept and model, but obviously it is housed in a building unlike our shipping containers in Bristol!’

With a focus on seasonality, the menu is always changing. ‘This keeps it fun and exciting, not only for the customers but also for the team making and serving the food’ says Rob. ‘The surrounding areas of Somerset are an incredible source of producers and growers, and our summer menu is always super fresh and colourful.’

Rob feels honoured to have had the opportunity to open a restaurant in his hometown. ‘I hope I can do the site justice and make the people of Wells proud and happy to have us here.’ It’s looking good so far.
