Enjoying a prominent position in Market Street Courtyard, LOAF is a warm, bustling café and bakery with a quirky interior and plenty of outdoor seating for when the sun shines.

Danny Williams and his wife, Lois, opened LOAF five years ago. The café has been a joint labour of love and the success of the interior is down to Lois and her creative eye. ‘We ‘cosied’ up the space, installing booths, painted wood furniture, and lots of greenery,’ says Danny. ‘It’s a reflection of us.’ The bike he had for his 30th birthday is now a cool art installation on the wall, whilst paintings by their two children grace the walls.

A children’s play area discreetly situated at one end of the café makes this a family-friendly destination. ‘We want the place to be buzzing, with laughter and chatting, and kids are part of that,’ explains Danny. ‘Music also provides a good vibe, so this is a loud café with lots of soul!’

The kitchen is Danny’s domain. Breakfast and ‘fine brunch’ is served during the day, and there is an emphasis on great coffee and tea. He encourages the staff to get involved. ‘If anyone has an interesting, creative idea for a dish then I’m all for it.’

The menu regularly changes, and has been lightened for the spring with fresh flavours. Also, keep a look out this month for the start of the new season when LOAF turns into a lively restaurant on Friday and Saturday evening, serving dishes from its woodfired oven.
