A walk that is suitable for all the family, a short and easy route of about two miles that can be expanded at various points.
Begin at The Pavilion Café on the Lord Street/ Eastbank Junction. If you have the time, have a look at the nearby Town Hall, an impressive building constructed in the mid-Victorian era. Spot its blue plaque, which honours FJ Hooper, a local man who, at the age of 19, went to the South Pole, to help find the bodies of Captain Scott and his team.
Cross the road and walk northwards, under the ironwork canopies, to Wayfarers Arcade. Pop in to have a look at the shops, enjoy a cup of tea and rub the solid bronze statue of Red Rum – the only horse to win the treble in the Grand National – and who trained on Southport sands.
Once back out, turn left onto Nevill Street, before making your way onto Marine Lake Promenade. You can extend your walk here by walking around the lake and, if you’ve brought a picnic, this might be a good place to enjoy it. You will be able to see the pier, the second longest in the UK but, at the moment, it is temporarily closed. Do check the website for further updates.
Cross the roundabout onto the Esplanade, where you will see the distinctive Eco Centre. Next to this is Queen’s Jubilee Nature Reserve. There are several trails to follow and, if you still have some treats in your hamper, there is a picnic area here.
Return to the roundabout, turning left to reach Marine Drive. The Ocean Plaza leisure Complex will be on your right. Pause here if you fancy a film or tenpin bowling. Pass the retail centre, then cross the Marine Way Suspension Bridge to Nevil Street and back to Lord Street.
