Odd House, Bretherton
THE VENDOR SAYS:
When was the house built? The original Odd House was built in about 1600 as a small cottage on the Lilford Estate. It housed the farm workers who would have worked on the adjacent land. We purchased the original cottage in 2011 and spent the next year getting planning for the existing house, the position on the plot now is some 60 metres from the original.
What first attracted you to the property? The location was our main deciding factor; the plot is not overlooked, has its own access road yet is still close enough to Bretherton and Croston, easy access to the A59 between Preston and Southport, and access to the M6 at Leyland is within 10 minutes. The fact we were able to design and build a new house to suit our needs was an added bonus.
How did you design the new home? With a young family at school in the area we needed a house with space to grow and attend the great schools in the village and Croston. We wanted the house to be as eco-friendly as possible and with enough space for the kids to thrive. We set about designing a modern house with ground source heat, a well for irrigation and the most up to date materials. It has been a great family house with space, light and a modern outlook allowing everyone to achieve whatever they wanted without interference.
What will you miss most? Our most used area in summer is the south facing patio area along with a firepit, large garden and paddock which, over the years, has hosted many garden parties. It has been a great family house and the location is second to none for a great work/life balance, in fact we are not moving far away, but into a smaller property for us, minus the kids.
Describe the garden: The house has great lawns to the front and rear with a paddock area beyond. The boundaries are made up of mature beech and laurel hedges to the front and hawthorn to the rear paddock area. There’s a s small but productive vegetable patch, too.
THE AGENT SAYS:
Set in a stunning, rural location surrounded by open pastoral aspects and in enclosed, landscaped grounds of approximately 1.3 acres, Odd House offers immaculately presented, contemporary accommodation over three floors which includes a principal lounge and dining room, a bespoke living-dining-kitchen, and a master bedroom with a dressing room and en-suite. The two further first floor double bedrooms both have en-suites, and there is a basement entertainment suite with shower room and a further bedroom suite/home office.
Outside, a tree-lined driveway through an extensive lawn leads to a large parking area, detached double garage, storage room and w.c. Beyond that are sheds and outbuildings, a gymnasium, and an extensive sun-terrace, large lawn and paddock.
