A place to potter, explore and enjoy a tasty feast. Time to take a visit to this West Lancashire town

Somewhere to eat

The newly opened Ormskirk Market is the new, tastiest spot on the block with street food including Birria tacos from Backyard, Spanish small plates from Burro Gordo and Chinese street food from Mei Shi by Luban – from the same team behind the multi award-winning Luban Restaurant in Liverpool, headed up by chef and former Great British Menu contestant Dave Critchley – to name just a few. Local favourite The Cricketers Arms serves everything from tapas to pub classics – think Goosnargh chicken and Fleetwood seabass from chef Tom Wells and the kitchen team. For brilliant bagels, bakes and cakes head to Bagel Deli owned by Martin Faultley whose love for bagels was first sparked as a 14-year-old working in London’s Brick Lane. You’ll also want to pick up some gingerbread – the sweet treat became popular when women started manufacturing it in Ormskirk from as early as 1732. Head to Mr Thompson’s at The Chapel Art House for a bite.

Somewhere to stay

The ideal retreat in nearby Lathom is Watkinsons Farm Glamping. This 120-acre vegetable farm has been in the same family since the 1930s. This small, friendly, laid-back glamping site is the ideal place to get away from things with family and friends. Bring your wellies and a sense of adventure for days spent yomping around the local countryside before resting your head in one of the Watkinsons Farm handful of bell tents that come with all the touches to make your stay a restful one – as well as your own firepit to cook on - and make those all important toasted marshmallows - and tell campfire stories around. watkinsonsfarm.co.uk

Somewhere to explore

Ormskirk is the perfect place to potter. Take a trip to The Chapel Art House, an independently run arts centre that showcases artists, musicians and talented creatives from across the region as well as hosting a busy programme of events, including their regular comedy night. Ormskirk also celebrates its gingerbread connections. You can enjoy the Heritage Trail, organised by Ormskirk Gingerbread Project.

There are also plenty of places to stroll nearby including places like wildlife haven, Martin Mere. Worth a short drive out to nearby Burscough is a trip to Natterjack Alpacas – where all the members of the family will enjoy joining in with an 60 minute alpaca trek with the characterful animals.
