As the long days of August stretch before us, there's no better time to explore the enchanting seaside town of Whitstable. This walk showcases the best of Kent's coastline, from its pebbled beaches to its rich maritime history. The route invites you to breathe in the invigorating sea air, watch water sports enthusiasts in action, and perhaps catch a stunning sunset over the water.
With opportunities to sample fresh seafood and explore local shops, this summer walk captures the vibrant spirit of coastal living.
The route:
● Begin at Marine Parade, overlooking Tankerton Slopes with its pastel-painted beach huts. Face the sea and turn left, walking along Marine Parade.
● Pass Whitstable Castle & Gardens on your left. Take the right footpath through gardens, following the path down to the seafront.
● Walk along the sea wall for about 700 metres, passing beach huts until you reach East Quay industrial yard.
● Turn left onto the road, following it as it curves. Before reaching the main road, turn right towards Whitstable Harbour.
● Explore the harbour's market stalls. At the RNLI lifeboat station, turn right and follow the coastal path.
● Continue for 750 metres along Whitstable's pebbled beach. Look out for 'The Favourite', the last Whitstable Oyster Yawl, on your left.
● Pass the Old Neptune pub and continue along Marine Terrace.
● At the end of the sports pitches, turn left onto Wilks Way, then left onto Island Wall.
● Walk 500 metres along Island Wall, admiring the houses, until you reach the main road.
● Cross at the Duke of Cumberland Hotel and turn left into Harbour Street.
● Explore Harbour Street's independent shops and eateries.
● At the end, use the zebra crossing to return to Whitstable Harbour.
● Turn right through the harbour and retrace your steps to Marine Parade.
