Gardening enthusiasts from Cranbrook in Bloom are celebrating after receiving a silver gilt award and winning the best small town category in the South & South East in Bloom contest, sponsored and supported by Southern Water.
Nearly 400 guests attended a prestigious awards ceremony at The Grand in Brighton and to mark their success, representatives from Cranbrook in Bloom were presented with an engraved glass trophy by Sussex Life editor, Jonathan Keeble.
This year was the most popular South & South East in Bloom ever with more than 200 entrants across 15 different categories including towns, villages, parks and neighbourhoods. There were also a number of other discretionary awards (see full list of winners below).
South & South East in Bloom is one of 18 regions in the UK which encourages communities of all sizes to make positive and lasting sustainable improvements to their local environments. Southern Water's support and sponsorship has enabled the competition to quadruple in size since 2002, not only enhancing local communities but also encouraging us all to avoid wasting water.
Jill Williamson and Joyce Gutkowska from Cranbrook in Bloom picked up the award, and Joyce said: "It's a glorious surprise and we're totally shocked."
Chairman of South & South East in Bloom, Peter Holman, said: "It's been a fantastic year and we're delighted that once again Southern Water has sponsored the event. The competition is all about gardening and horticulture, making areas look attractive and communities pulling together, as well as promoting the need to care for the environment and sustainability. I'd like to congratulate everyone who makes a contribution to making the South & South East a great place to live, work and visit."
Andy Shaddick, Public Affairs Manager at Southern Water, said: "This competition is a great example of people taking care of their environment and using water wisely. As ever, we've seen some outstanding entries from dedicated individuals and groups, and thanks to their hard work, we've got some wonderful places to visit across the counties."
The contest welcomes entries from East and West Sussex, Kent, Surrey, Hampshire, The Isle of Wight, East & North Dorset and East Wiltshire. Entrants were awarded bronze, silver, silver gilt or gold awards, with an overall winner chosen from each category. Marks were awarded according to a number of criteria, including how efficient the entrants were with water and other natural resources.
