Where else can you tuck into a perfectly cooked steak while gazing through a picture window at the gushing Hamble River as it cascades to depths below?
Or indeed, enjoy a bottle of Hampshire wine in the background of a 1920s grain shoot. I am of course, talking about The Old Mill in Botley, a restaurant which beautifully combines really good food and drink with wonderful local history to create an individual and unique dining experience.
The Mill (which we overheard the locals calling it) was originally part of the Manor of Botley before passing through several families and finally becoming a flour mill in the early 1920s. No attempt has been made to hide the history of the building and its previous life, and the tables and chairs sit comfortably around the historic pieces which the owners have lovingly restored.
All this history makes for a wonderfully, cosy atmosphere, particularly at this time of year. We were greeted with a glass of Classic Cuvee from nearby Wickham Estate Vineyard, which forms part of the trio of businesses linked with the restaurant, also including 1086 Wine Bar and Charcuterie which is situated next door. And the welcoming bar area is the perfect place to enjoy an aperitif or cocktail as you take in the majestic surroundings.
When it comes to the menu, you can expect British classics featuring a variety of local producers. Slow roasted belly of pork, steak fillet with all the trimmings and chicken breast wrapped in pancetta are just some of the indulgent main courses, while pudding doesn’t disappoint with favourites including sticky toffee pudding and lemon meringue pie. Owner, James Davies knows what his customers want, because he was one, and took over the running of the restaurant eight years ago to save his ‘favourite drinking spot’. Now, together with Head Chef Dean Knibbs, James’ menu reflects the dishes he and his friends like to eat…and judging by the happy faces around us on the night, what his customers like too.
