Discover the best places to walk your dogs to help protect Hampshire's wildlife

We find that most dog owners place a high value on the importance of the natural world. After all, they are the ones out in it every day come rain or shine. We welcome thousands of four legged visitors to Hampshire’s coastal areas every day and know that dog walkers are in a prime position to help us protect these sensitive places.

Coast and Country Canines is an initiative by Bird Aware Solent - a partnership of local councils, Natural England, The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and the RSPB - to create a caring community of dogs and their companions who want to enjoy adventures responsibly in wildlife-rich areas.

Here at Bird Aware Solent, as dog owners ourselves we are always on the lookout for new places to explore on two legs and four, but it is always helpful to know in advance what to expect. Talking to other dog owners, we found this was a common feeling.

The Coast and Country Canines website features a series of walks that includes a place for dogs to play, beautiful views as well as practical details including where to park, find a public toilets or have a refreshment break. One example is a short circular walk around Hamble Common boasting beautiful sea vistas, woodland paths and even friendly cows. Or try our 45-minute stroll at Lepe Country Park taking a lesser-used top path with stunning sightlines and a great place to play and train with your dog. You’ll also find helpful information on the website such as recall and loose-lead walking alongside ideas for canine-friendly games.

Follow Coast and Country Canines on Instagram and Facebook to stay up to date with the latest news. There’s also a private Coast and Country Canines Facebook Group where you can find like-minded pet owners and share your thoughts, tips and photos. coastandcountrycanines.org
