Artist James Merriott unveils some stunning artworks, all focused on the pretty Essex village of Thaxted

This is another of the Essex villages I can only describe as having monumental charm. I have gazed at its supreme beauty, sketched and painted it on countless occasions during my time as a painter. Never for one second have I ever tired of it.

Some 50 years on from my first attempts to return to art since my schooldays, I can reflect on many changes. Not that I was seeking change but sticking wholly and determinedly to watercolours the changes came along by themselves, necessitated by the passing of time that gradually brought deformity to both hands and perhaps softened a once-alert mind.

One thing; however, that never changes is my enthusiasm to cope, whatever the challenge or its difficulties.

Which brings me back to Thaxted, where my wife Joan and I were beautifully escorted by our daughter Julie. On a cold day with little sun in early June, we found our stroll got the better of us and, in spite of being almost impossible for Joan, she accomplished some superb images that I was able to work from at home.

A collection of watercolours with a change in style but completed from a family effort. I do hope you get some pleasure from them.
