Linda Marshall, Office Manager National Trust for Scotland, Castle Douglas, and owner of Events First Aid & Rescue
What do you love about Dumfries & Galloway? For me it’s the forgotten part of Scotland, with rich scenery and tranquillity. Hopefully it will stay like that. You don’t have to go far for amazing walks, cycling routes, places to eat, and there’s none of the hustle and bustle of city life.
What’s the best thing about Castle Douglas? It has been my home town forever. I was away for a few years and came back. There have been lots of changes; some good, some bad. I have family close by which is great. Most of the shops on King Street are still independently owned.
Tell us about your job: I am an office manager for the National Trust for Scotland, based at Threave Garden & Nature Reserve for the past 22 years. It has gone by in a flash. During that time, I have worked in various departments - catering, finance and now administration. I have loved the interaction with the public who have visited the property; now I am more content in the office. My colleagues past and present, have been amazing.
Who’s the most interesting person you have met? I had great pleasure of having a chat with the now King Charles III and Queen Camilla, when they visited Threave in 2006.
I think everyone I meet is interesting: we all have different backgrounds, outlooks on life, opinions, and stories to tell. From what I have heard over the years, I have learned something every day.
What’s your ambition? To retire and enjoy life for many years, to have quality time with family and friends. My biggest ambition is to convince my husband Chris to go on some holidays.
What do you do to unwind? I tend not to have a great deal of time to unwind but if I do, I like to read books, do jigsaws and do nothing (if I can get away with it!)
Where do you recommend for great entertainment in the region? Music at the Multiverse, at Crawick (near Sanquhar), and all the other events that happen in D&G, which are widespread and varied.
Where do you recommend for a good bite to eat? The Market Inn in Castle Douglas: great food, friendly staff, and cosy surroundings.
Tell us something that none many people know about you? My husband Chris and I have a small event first aid company (Events First Aid & Rescue) which keeps us extremely busy throughout the year and takes us across D&G and all over Scotland, to the most amazing events. From cycling events and local galas to music festivals, we get to all the best parties locally. We like the diversity and variety of local events and have met some amazing people along the way. Credit to our team for their continued support, commitment and enthusiasm.
What would you change about D&G: I wouldn’t change anything. I love D&G as it is.
Dumfries & Galloway in a single word? Home.
