As the weather improves, there’s nothing better than enjoying the outdoors and Drumlanrig Castle Gardens is the perfect place for great adventures for everyone, from keen gardeners and photographers to history enthusiasts and families looking for a fantastic day out to remember.

Located just three miles from Thornhill and 30 mins from Dumfries, Drumlanrig Castle Gardens are open daily, from 9.30am to 4.30pm, until the end of October. And with over 40 acres to explore, they offer a slice of horticultural heaven for all.

Embark on a botanical journey through the gardens with the aid of a comprehensive map, available to photograph or download on entry. Or, delve deeper, with a guided tour led by esteemed Head Gardener, Robbie Black, who has more than 25 years of expertise. Learn about the garden's diverse areas, marvel at the seasonal blooms, and glean invaluable gardening tips, straight from the source.

Capture the kaleidoscope of colours in the gardens in May and June. From the delicate bluebells gracing the Bog Garden and Pet Cemetery, to the impressive rhododendrons and azaleas in the Woodland and Rock Gardens Garden. The sights (and smells) have to be experienced.

Indulge your passion for flora amid the exquisite borders of the Castle Gardens. And be inspired to buy from our outdoor plant centre, next to the Larchwood Cabin, to grow a piece of Drumlanrig at home. Choose from an array of perennials and annuals in our fantastic 2024 collection.

Drumlanrig encapsulates the history of gardening in Scotland, from origins in the 17th Century to present day. The Gardens are influenced strongly by the Victorian era, steeped in historical design and architecture, and feature a mix of modern planting designs and Victorian style.

FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

The gardens themselves are perfect for picnics or games of hide-and-seek, and our large adventure playground, with tall tower slides, climbing structures and racing zip wires, provides plenty of opportunities for children.

Dogs are welcome in the gardens, and at Larchwood Cabin Café, the perfect spot to enjoy a light lunch, cakes, traybakes, and local ice cream.
