One of the world’s most respected big wave surfers, and an ambassador for surf-inspired clothing brand, Saltrock, it’s no surprise that Andrew Cotton loves the coastal landscape of North Devon

Tell us briefly about yourself and what you do in the county

I’m a professional big wave surfer, I got into this seriously after a very early career in the surf industry then a very different career in plumbing. I spend a lot of time training in Europe but also live in North Devon. I spend the second half of the year competing and chasing the world’s biggest waves.  I also do a mix of event speaking, brand ambassador work and experience and activation days. My work is pretty varied.

What’s the best thing about living in Devon?

The coastline and amazing beaches and waves. It’s a natural playground for water enthusiasts, especially surfers. There are long stretches of beach and rugged coves, so plenty of surf spots to choose from!

And the worst?

The trade for being in such a beautiful area, is that it can get busy with traffic over the summer and it’s difficult to park.

That’s an easy one, looking across Saunton Sands from the main road, it’s panoramic!

September is a lovely month here. The summer crowds have gone, sea temperatures are at their highest, there’s still good air temperatures and the winter Atlantic swells starts.
