A grand Italianate mansion in Exeter is gaining a reputation as an enchanting wedding venue

Standing amidst the tranquil gardens that envelope Reed Hall, you would never guess that you are just a stone’s throw from the historic City Centre of Exeter.As you wind your way along the drive towards the majestic house, you pass by lush botanical gardens laden with exotic flowers and plants gathered from all corners of the world. With many of the original terraces and aged steps still in place, your mind starts to wander to thoughts of the old Reed Hall in days gone by.

This grand Italianate mansion dates back to 1867 when it was originally named Streatham Hall and was built for Richard Thornton West, himself a merchant millionaire. Behind its imposing exterior lies a rich and colourful history. From Military hospital during the war to a men’s hall of residence in the early 1900’s, the house has lent itself to all manner of uses in the past.

All things considered, you can’t help but be enraptured by the enchanting air that greets you. And that’s before you have even stepped through the front doors.

On arrival you will be greeted with a distinct homely yet regal ambience. Elegance and charm radiate from the sparkling chandeliers and ornate ceilings. Graceful architecture and antique furnishings, splendid fireplaces and lofty ceilings all serve to amplify the rich sense of history that prevails. During the cooler months, the magnificent sweeping staircase in the hallway makes a magical space for an after ceremony drinks gathering.

Three of the rooms in the house are licensed for civil ceremonies. The Ibrahim Ahmed Room offers an intimate setting for the smaller wedding, seating up to 40 guests. The Upper Lounge, with its sweeping views across the Exeter Valley can accommodate up to 78 guests. For the larger gathering, the elegant Woodbridge Room can hold up to 118 guests. Each room has its own unique charm and the flexibility to lend itself to any wedding vision. Wedding receptions also take place in the Woodbridge Room, an atmospheric space with wooden panelling and glass doors that open out onto the lush green lawns, nothing short of an idyllic backdrop for a celebratory gathering.

Reed Hall prides itself on a reputation for good food. With a passionate team of dedicated chefs, it is a certainty that no taste bud will be left untingled. Bespoke menus are created, incorporating the finest of local and seasonal ingredients and can be adapted to suit any taste or dietary requirement.

The original eight bedrooms can be found on the top floor of the house. The bridal suite itself is a dual aspect room with views reaching as far as Haldon Hill, a tranquil space, perfect to unwind and reflect on the events of a dreamy special day.

If fairy tale factor is high on your priority list then you need look no further. Ornate statues and features, lawns and terraces, a small pond engulfed with mature trees and vibrant flowers provide no end of opportunities for those all-important wedding photos. Picture guests, in their finest attire, strolling through the garden, fizz in hand, discovering hidden corners and cosy nooks.
