To describe Hyatt Regency London – The Churchill as faultless perhaps sounds a little hyperbolic but, in truth, it’s difficult to come to any other conclusion.

First opened in 1970, Hyatt Regency London – The Churchill is as sophisticated, quintessentially British and bespoke as you’d imagine from a hotel which bears the name of Britain’s great war-time leader.

Indeed, it has worked closely with the Churchill family to ensure its décor and numerous Churchillian homages found throughout are befitting of his legacy – look out for original Churchill artwork, photographs, artefacts and, of course, cigars!

One observation from our two-night stay is the relaxed atmosphere which pervades every part of the hotel, from the moment you enter its striking lobby.

Staff are attentive, knowledgeable and offer a service befitting of a five-star establishment, yet there is no aloofness, no feeling of unease. Everything is centred on giving guests a memorable and enjoyable experience.

Make no mistake, this is a hotel full of character, charm and individuality where no expense is spared.

Arriving for a two-night stay in a prestigious five-star hotel in one of London’s most desirable locations brings with it a certain level of expectation.

Fortunately, Hyatt Regency London – The Churchill met and exceeded that expectation on every level.

LOCATION

It really doesn’t get much better.

Situated in Marylebone, in London’s exclusive West End, the hotel’s location off Portman Square Garden (where guests enjoy exclusive access) is surprisingly peaceful and calm.

The tranquil setting is all the more remarkable, given Marble Arch Tube Station is a mere 200 metres away, while iconic London locations such as Hyde Park, Regent’s Park and Oxford Street are within easy walking distance.

Hyatt Regency London – The Churchill is also superbly placed for a wide number of landmarks, such as Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, Churchill War Rooms, the British Museum, Madame Tussauds, among others.

It is also in close proximity to some of London’s most revered neighbourhoods in which to experience the energy of London – think Soho (and Carnaby Street), Mayfair and, of course, the bright lights of the West End itself; this truly is the Theatre District of England’s capital.

THE ROOMS

We were fortunate enough to be given a guided tour and the suites – including the Churchill Residential Suite – are truly remarkable, both in size and grandeur. It isn’t over the top to suggest they could easily be utilised for state visits.

The adjoining family rooms are wonderfully thoughtful, with treats waiting for the children on their beds, which seemed a nice touch.

Our standard room was spacious, the bed comfortable and – not always the case on a trip to London – gloriously quiet, with hardly any outside noise.

On both mornings we felt well rested, which is just as well with all the tantalising delights of central London on the doorstep.

DINING OUT (OR IN)

Arguably the highlight of the trip was the hotel’s popular The Montagu Kitchen.

The ambiance was perfect but, as they say, the proof is in the pudding and the restaurant delivers.

We were fortunate enough to be treated to a chef’s selection menu and the food – both meat and vegetarian dishes – were a triumph.

It was also interesting to hear how sourcing local produce and evolving the menus around seasonality is a high priority for the experienced and highly skilled chefs.

All our dishes came with a carefully chosen complementing wine choice. As a non-drinker, I didn’t miss out as I was made the most heavenly mocktail which was so good I didn’t try another, opting instead to have the same again.

The following night, before heading to the theatre, we enjoyed signature cocktails and canapés at the award-winning Churchill Bar & Terrace, where the Churchill theme really comes into its own in this stylish lounge complete with eye-catching art deco-style bar.

We finished out culinary experience back in the Montagu Kitchen for a sumptuous Sunday roast to round off our trip.

Considering the array of first-class options available in the West End, it’s quite something that you could happily confine your food and drink experience to the hotel and feel completely justified in your decision.

DON’T MISS

If you choose to stay in Regency Club rooms or one of the suites, the Regency Club Lounge will undoubtedly add that little bit of extra luxury to your visit.

Situated on the top floor, guests are afforded wonderful views of the London skyline in a relaxed, spacious environment that feels extremely exclusive.

Guests are welcome to graze on complimentary snacks and refreshments, which include alcoholic and soft beverages, and there’s even a canapé and champagne hour!

A highly worthwhile upgrade.
