How to spend a day in Chesterfield in Derbyshire

What better way to start your day in Chesterfield than a lovely stroll through Queen’s Park. Opened in 1887 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, this beautiful curated open space was once a hotspot for demonstrations and protests but is now popular for more tranquil, leisurely pursuits.
The Café in the Park is a lovely setting for a spot of breakfast or brunch and there’s plenty to explore, including a bandstand, miniature railway, park and a cricket pitch, home of Chesterfield CC, which is widely regarded as one of the most picturesque in the country.
Suitably refreshed and relaxed, you’re just a short walk over the bridge into the heart of Chesterfield town centre and all its myriad delights.
Afternoon
Explore the nooks and crannies of the Shambles, with its cobbled streets and old alleyways that lead to quirky cafes and centuries-old pubs.
Just a short walk from the town centre, Saint Mary’s Gate will lead you to undoubtedly Chesterfield’s most famous monument – the Church of St Mary’s and All Saints, better known to most as the ‘Crooked Spire’.
Marvel at its height, uniqueness and imperious beauty and then take to its interior, where you’ll realise it is just as beautiful on the inside.
Feeling peckish? There are plenty of eateries located nearby. For something a little different, why not enjoy some authentic German cuisine at Einstein’s on Holywell Street – their schnitzels are delicious!
Evening
It’s time for some entertainment and Chesterfield has much to offer in this regard with a choice of popular venues available.
If comedy is your thing, why not check the listings at the Winding Wheel, a two minute walk from the centre of town or, for a fully immersive theatre experience, head across the road to the much-loved Pomegranate Theatre to take in a show and enjoy a relaxing pre-performance drink in the cosy bar area.
There are plenty of accommodation options in the town to unwind after a busy day, including the four-star, award-winning Casa Hotel which is around a mile or so from the town centre next to the football stadium on Lockoford Lane.
