Spend a day in Derbyshire's sole city.

MORNING

After breakfasting at one of the many fantastic independent cafes and eateries in the famed Cathedral Quarter – and explored the myriad shopping opportunities and architectural wonders – why not head to Friar Gate and discover Derby Gaol, said to be one of the most haunted spots in the whole country.

Used between 1756 and 1828, it is now a museum which has been restored to its former condition and offers a fascinating glimpse into the past.

Once you’re done you can take advantage of your location on Friar Gate by choosing somewhere sumptuous for brunch or lunch. There’s plenty of choice, including The Dining Room; Bistrot Pierre; The Distillery; and The Spice Lounge, which all enjoy excellent reputations.

AFTERNOON

Heading back into the centre after lunch, why not take a riverside stroll, a traffic-free route and offering a bit of peace and quiet despite being in the heart of the city.

Then, it’s time for a bit of culture. QUAD Derby is the city’s self-styled cultural hub and is conveniently placed next to the Guildhall in the Market Place.

Here, plenty of options present themselves. Watch the world go by in the café, explore one of the exhibitions and even take in a film.

From here, you’re a literal stone’s throw from Derby Guildhall Market, which has been trading since 1866 and now houses a varied collection of traditional and contemporary stalls all run by local people.

EVENING

As the sun sets, it’s time to take in a show. Head to Derby Theatre to take in a performance. With the theatre located in the large Derbion shopping centre featuring household-name brands, there may even be chance to take in a little retail therapy before the performance.

If there’s time afterwards, why not head to BEAR Derby right in the middle of the city centre and a short walk from the theatre to enjoy some high-quality food and a nightcap.

Then, after a long day, it’s time to unwind at one of Derby’s many great places to stay – you’re spoilt for choice.

The central Holiday Inn Derby Riverlights is an option, so too is the Cathedral Quarter Hotel, the first designer boutique hotel in the area.
