Worried about recent back pain or an ongoing problem with your joints? Have you been struggling to get an appointment or treatment?
Since the pandemic, the process of getting appointments and referrals to specialists through the NHS has changed dramatically. Increasing demands on GP’s and longer waiting times prompted About Backs & Bones, a private health clinic based in Allestree, to set up their own GP service to streamline the diagnosis and treatment system for their patients in Derby.
“We have noticed that patients have been experiencing difficulties with calling their practice at 8am, staying on the line for up to an hour and not getting through to the receptionist,” reveals Paula Collier-Ward, director of About Backs and Bones.
“The NHS provides exceptional patient care with talented, dedicated staff throughout but the demand on individual practices has drastically increased since the pandemic.”
We chat to Paula about the benefits of having quick access to specialist osteopaths, physiotherapists and GPs.
1. Experienced specialists in a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions
Dealing with painful conditions like arthritis or severe injuries can be extremely difficult. Knowing that you don’t have to wait a long time for an initial appointment, only to join a long waiting list, can make all the difference to your health and peace of mind.
“We have over 20 experienced practitioners in our clinic,” explains Paula. “From osteopaths to physiotherapists, massage therapists and acupuncturists, we have a selection of practitioners available for patients concerned about their physical or mental wellbeing.
“We also have specialist mother and baby practitioners providing osteopathy, acupuncture, reflexology and massage for pregnant women.”
2. Face-to-face appointments with friendly GPs
Once you call the clinic’s reception, you can expect a 20-minute appointment to be scheduled within a day or two. In contrast, limitations on appointment times for many GP surgeries means they happen virtually, usually over the phone. For some patients, the lack of face-to-face contact can be disconcerting.
Seeing the same GP for each of your appointments ensures continuity of care throughout your time at the practice. “When patients see multiple GPs for a variety of issues, there is some risk of disjointed care,” Paula says.
“When the same person has a complete overview of your health record, understanding the pattern of their health becomes much easier and potential dangers can be picked up much sooner.”
3. Rapid referrals to further treatment
One of the most challenging aspects for healthcare is the waiting times for treatment. Once seen by an NHS GP, the waiting times can vary drastically depending on the condition and treatment required. Whilst the care is still exemplary, waiting times can cause undue stress and sometimes exacerbate the patient’s condition.
“We’re dedicated to ensuring that the gaps between the initial stages of examinations and further treatment remain as minimal as possible,” Paula adds. “Appointments for our osteopaths and physiotherapists are usually within a day. If further referral is needed outside of the clinic, then our GP’s can ensure a quick transfer to a specialist.”
4. Minor surgery clinic enables non-essential treatments
As well as assured continuity of care and shorter waiting times, our GPs specialising in minor surgery can provide treatments that the NHS no longer has the capacity to provide.
“Removing sebaceous cysts and moles can be done very easily,” explains Paula. “Our specialist musculoskeletal GP can administer ultrasound-guided injections to treat painful joints and other conditions. Our GP specialising in women’s health has particular expertise in managing menopausal symptoms.”
5. An effective alternative route to medical care
Physically painful conditions can make everyday life difficult, as well as increasing emotional difficulties. Caring for your mental wellbeing as well as your physical health is crucial to a strong recovery.
“The philosophy at our practice revolves around a holistic approach,” says Paula. “We have wonderful practitioners who aim to ease the strain on our patients, enabling them get back on the road to recovery.”
