It says something for the village of Castleton that despite its famous charm, breath-taking scenery and popular attractions that draw visitors from miles around, it has still managed to carve out an additional reputation for being Derbyshire’s Christmas village.

It’s a time when the whole community collectively come together to put on a festive display that could soften the heart of even the most Scrouge-like visitor.

Indeed, the whole village radiates a magical feel with Christmas lights and decorations adorning doors and public building – a sight to behold for both locals and visitors alike.

There’s plenty to keep the children and wider family entertained in this Peak District beauty spot at this time of year, including a Santa’ Grotto at weekends and even the chance of seeing Father Christmas parade through the famous streets in a horse-drawn cart.

Local businesses equally buy into the Christmas spirit, with many independent stores extending opening hours and pubs, cafes and restaurants offering guests wonderful ambiance and atmosphere.

It’s not just the village itself that invests heavily in the Christmas spirit. Castleton’s famous show caves are a hive of activity in December and it’s worth checking the website (visitpeakdistrict.com/things-to-do/attractions/caverns-and-caves) to see what festive-themed events they have on.

And of course, whilst the white stuff as Christmas is never guaranteed, Castleton’s elevated position means that if there is snow around, it’ll more than likely be heading your way!

Castleton is beautiful at any time of the year but there’s nothing quite like a Castleton Christmas.

As mentioned, Castleton’s caves are magical every December and 2022 is set to be no different.

‘Christmas Carol Concerts in Peak Cavern’ just sounds perfect, and there are plenty of dates available in order to squeeze it into your packed festive diary.

The concerts (including brass bands) will incorporate classic Christmas songs and carols and last just over an hour and you’ll be welcomed with a mulled wine and minced pie – just as well as the cavern is likely to be very cold!

If atmosphere is your thing, this is likely to have it in abundance. The concerts take place each Saturday and Sunday in December up to Christmas, starting on Saturday December 3.

Doors open at 5pm for a 6pm start. Further details at peakcavern.co.uk/christmas-carol-concerts.

Why not get fully immersed in all things Castleton by booking in at one of the various lovely B&B establishments which can be found in the village.

The local scene:

As eluded to, Castleton brings a strong sense of community and a collective pride in this wonderful part of the world and this is well and truly on show at Christmas.

Locals are friendly, accommodating and keen to share the joys of the festive season with visitors.

Naturally, the village can get quite busy in December and there is additional pressure on the infrastructure.

The village’s website (castletonvillage.co.uk) sets out its asks of visitors nicely with its very own ‘Castleton Code’.

It states: ‘At busy times spread out and stay safe. Respect residents’ needs, park in car parks not the street, be considerate to staff in our shops, cafes and pubs. Enjoy peace and quiet, let the birds be heard to tweet. Enjoy our beautiful village.’
