An epic recovery drive by Andy Schulz snatched victory in the final moments of the Britcar Endurance Championship and brought another great year at Donington to a close
Javier Morcillo quickly established his Mosler MT900R in the lead with the Paul Bailey/Andy Schulz Aston Martin Vantage following. Bailey was third when pitting to hand over to Schulz who resumed four laps adrift after serving a drive-through penalty for a misdemeanour by Bailey. Spurred on by still being in contention for the title, Schulz put in a scintillating shift to regain the laps lost and with just nine minutes of the two-hour race remaining passed Morcillo’s team mate Manuel Cintrano to get back onto the lead lap – although unlikely to make up the final lap in the time left. Then Cintrano spun at the Old Hairpin and with just three minutes left on the clock Schulz had the lead, claiming a famous victory 54 seconds ahead of Morcillo and Cintrano.
However, the win was not enough to take the title as Chris Jones and Ian Loggie’s sixth place – and class win – in their Porsche 997 sealed the overall title by just a single point. Fifth place earned Ian Lawson and Anthony Wilds the Britcar Production Cup title behind race winners Adam Hayes and Kevin Clarke in their BMW M3.
