The chocolate-box-perfect Cotswold village of Broadway ticks all the boxes, with independent boutiques, luxurious hotels and glorious local walking routes in abundance - but perhaps what it does best of all is food, with an unrivalled selection of tearooms, pubs and restaurants to choose from
Tea rooms and cafes
1. Broadway Deli, High Street
"Shall we go to the Broadway Deli" is like music to the ears of any local - this thriving delicatessen and café has been a firm part of the village centre since its establishment in 2002, set within the historic St Patrick's building. It is open from Tuesdays to Saturdays between 8am and 5pm, and the breakfast options here are particularly good; you'll fine everything from simple poached eggs and avocado on toast through to a Full English, as well as a number of vegan and gluten-free alternatives.
The Broadway Deli also has an on-site shop, stocking the finest produce from around the world.
2. Number 32, High Street
This stylish café is great for lunch, with an extensive menu on offer - they serve a range of sandwiches and bagels, but if you fancy something more filling you might opt for one of their stone-baked pizzas or the dry-aged beef burger with bacon, cheese and red onion and paprika mayo.
You could also sample one of their breakfast options that are served all day. As well as simple toast and jam, you could choose the spicy smashed avocado or eggs Benedict.
3. Morris and Brown, Broadway Tower
If you've just walked from the village centre up to the beautiful Broadway Tower you'll certainly have worked up an appetite, but Morris and Brown will have you covered. Lunch is served until 4pm, as well as a wide range of coffee, cakes and 'light bites' to choose from. For something more filling try the beef and vegetable pasty or the handmade shortcrust pie, and make sure you have a cup of their special house blend tea.
There is also a well-stocked shop here, which is the ideal place for picking up a few gifts and souvenirs.
4. Hunter's Tearoom, High Street
Visitors to Hunter's can expect a warm and friendly welcome, as well as a great selection of home-cooked food. If you're there before 11.30am you can try their Full English breakfast, or for lunch take your pick from options such as mushroom stroganoff, homemade beef lasagne or a range of sandwiches. As a result, it's the perfect option if you're in search of a hearty, filling meal.
Hunter's is open from 10am to 4pm on weekdays, and from 10am to 5pm over the weekend.
5. The Tea Set, The Huntings
For an afternoon tea done properly, look no further than The Tea Set - a selection of homemade sandwiches, scones and cakes all come served on vintage china and traditional tired stands for a truly authentic experience. Try their special afternoon blend tea as an accompaniment, or perhaps you might go all out and opt for a glass of bubbly instead.
They also offer a breakfast menu, as well as a range of savoury lunch options such as jacket potatoes, toasties and sandwiches.
6. Tisane's Tea Room, The Green
This quintessentially English tea room is housed within a spectacular 17th century building overlooking the village green, priding itself on its traditional values and cheerful welcome. An extensive lunch menu awaits visitors, with a range of hot and sandwiches that are made to order. This is a particularly good option for coeliacs as there is a separate gluten free menu available - which even comes complete with a full afternoon tea - so no one has to miss out. In the summer months you can dine out in the garden, and your canine friends are welcome too.
7. Market Pantry, High Street
This hidden gem is nestled in the middle of the High Street, and despite its small size it has earned a big reputation for its menu. Plenty of breakfast options are available until 11.30am, and then for lunch you can choose from the likes of their special burger, the fishcake of the day or the warm goat's cheese salad with butternut squash and pine nuts. Alternatively you could indulge with a decadent afternoon tea, or you can choose a sweet treat from their cake counter.
8. Leaf and Bean, The Green
Calling all coffee connoisseurs - we've found the place for you. The Leaf and Bean serve up a fantastic house roast from Ue Coffee Roasters that is raved about by visitors from near and far, as well as an impressive selection of over 50 loose leaf teas. It's not all about the brews, though, as they also serve a range of lunch options as well as a fantastic cream tea.
Restaurants
1. Russell's, High Street
With dishes that have been created under the watchful eye of head chef George Santos, diners at Russell's are in for a treat. You'll find a superb a la carte menu here which is available throughout the week - choose from options such as pan fried sea bass or guinea fowl breast, but be sure to save room for the peanut brownie with chocolate ganache for pudding.
However, Russell's real party piece is its Sunday roast menu which is famed throughout the Cotswolds…and rightly so. You'll find all the traditional options with locally sourced meats, such as the roast loin of Paddock Farm pork accompanied by all the trimmings. This menu is served between 12 and 2.30pm, so what better way to round off the week?
2. The Lygon Arms, High Street
A trip to The Lygon Arms is an absolute must whilst you're in Broadway, even if it's simply to take a peek at the stunning interior of this 16th century coaching inn. Once you've stepped foot in the door, though, the excellent food offering is sure get your stomach rumbling. The Bar and Grill offers informal but decadent dining - try their steak burger or sample the regularly changing 'Butcher's Special', and there is also a separate vegan menu. You could also pull up a chair in the Wine Bar, or treat yourself to an afternoon tea outside in the courtyard. After you've had your fill, kick back and relax in the lounge area with a cocktail in hand.
Think of ultimate Cotswolds bliss, and Dormy House might spring to mind - this luxurious hotel is the epitome of a rural retreat thanks to roaring open fires, sumptuous rooms and stunning surrounding countryside. There are a number of restaurants here that are renowned for the quality of their food: at The Back Garden you'll find the finest local produce, including vegetables that have been grown on site. You might choose the poached springfield chicken with hand rolled macaroni for your main, followed by lemon meringue with shortbread and basil. The Potting Shed offers a more laid back dining experience and the feel of a country pub, and earlier this year the hotel also opened MO - here diners are treated to an interactive eight-course tasting menu, but this restaurant only seats twelve people so you'd better get booking...
4. The Fish Hotel, Farncombe Estate
Boasting an idyllic location within 400 acres of the very best Cotswold countryside is The Fish Hotel, and whether you're staying here for the weekend or just passing by, the fantastic menus are not to be missed. Martin Burge heads up Hook, a luxurious dining hotspot that specialises in seafood; alternatively, parties of between 10 and 20 people can dine al fresco on The Fish's very own 'Feasting Deck'. Here you'll have a three course meal cooked right in front of you in wood fired ovens and a state of the art Weber barbecue, which promises to 'knock the socks off' the usual burgers and bangers.
5. The Broadway Hotel, The Green
This country hotel is home to The Tattersall's Brasserie, which has been awarded with two rosettes on account of its excellent cuisine. On the dinner menu are options such as cod crispy cheek with home cured pork belly, followed by veal roast loin pave or barbeque celeriac with peanut and sesame kale. The puddings are the stuff of dreams, too - perhaps you might go for the iced Granny Smith apple parfait. On Sundays you can choose from the likes of a slow roast Lighthorne leg of lamb or a butternut squash, lentil and cumin 'wellington'.
Pubs
1. The Crown and Trumpet, Church Street
This 17th century inn was recently crowned as The Good Pub Guide's 'Value Pub of the Year', so diners here can be assured of fantastic food at very reasonable prices - it's a great lunch stop-off point if you're exploring the village, with a range of sandwiches and more filling options available. Find a cosy spot here in the evenings too, and sample one of their hearty pies or the duck and apricot sausages that come served with mashed potato and a plum gravy.
2. The Swan, The Green
There are few better places to spend a sunny summer's evening than the outdoor terrace of The Swan. With a glass of wine in hand, take your pick from their extensive a la carte menu - share the mezze platter to start (or keep it for yourself, we won't judge you), and then sample the lobster and Devon crab fishcakes or the slow-cooked pork belly and cured pork cheek with scallops. There are also a number of pizzas, salads and burgers on offer, as well as a separate vegan menu with plenty to choose from. The Swan is known for its excellent Sunday lunch offering, where you'll find the traditional favourites complete with all the trimmings.
