Designing the perfect luxury contemporary bathroom is an art form that balances functionality with sophisticated aesthetics. I aim to create spaces that not only cater to practical needs but also offer a serene, indulgent retreat, and I adore designing modern wet room-style bathrooms. To achieve the balance of function and form involves meticulous planning and attention to detail.
The layout is the foundation of any successful bathroom design; it must maximise space while promoting a sense of openness and flow. So where do you start?
Step 1: Assess the space
Take accurate measurements and note the locations of existing plumbing and electrical points. This will help you understand what you have to work with and if any structural changes are necessary.
Step 2: Create zones
Divide the bathroom into functional zones: shower area, vanity area, bath area and toilet area. In a wet room, the shower area can be the focal point or it can be hidden behind the vanity or bath. Place it strategically to avoid splashing. Consider a walk-in shower with a glass or solid partition to maintain an open feel while containing water spray. If space permits, open the shower on both sides and if you really want to go all the way, opt for a double shower.
Step 3: Positioning the feature bath
A freestanding bath serves as a striking centrepiece. Position it where it can be admired, such as under a window or in the centre of the room if space allows. Ensure there is adequate space around the bath for ease of movement and cleaning.
Step 4: Wall-hung fixtures
Wall-hung fixtures such as toilets and sinks create a sense of space by exposing more floor area. Ensure the wall structure can support these fixtures. Wall-mounted elements also make cleaning easier and give a sleek, uncluttered appearance.
Bringing it all together
With the layout determined, it's time to bring the design to life with carefully chosen materials and finishes.
Tiles
Large format tiles are essential for a contemporary look and are available in sizes up to 3000mm x 1500mm. They reduce grout lines, creating a seamless, uncluttered appearance. Choose tiles in a matte finish or slip-resistant polished with neutral tones. Porcelain tiles are a durable and stylish choice and can come in thicknesses as little as 6mm making them easier to handle and install.
Not every installer can, but ask if they can mitre the edges for a seamless join, removing the need for tile trims. This will elevate the look to new luxe heights.
Marbling
Marble veining is synonymous with luxury. Incorporate it in your large format tiles for a high-end look. Whether you choose real marble or a quality porcelain alternative, ensure the veining is consistent and harmonious. This will create a unified, elegant aesthetic.
Try to match the pattern where possible and consider the layout so the veins connect from tile to tile.
Drainage
A hidden drainage system is a hallmark of modern wet rooms and enhances the minimalist look. Linear drains can be installed along the shower area or around the perimeter, ensuring efficient water removal while maintaining a clean, unobtrusive look. Make sure the floor is properly sloped towards the drain to prevent water pooling. Extend hidden drainage to your sink and choose a long, sleek design in materials such as porcelain, natural stone or composite.
Your installer should tank and seal outside the shower area too for longevity.
Taps
Taps and fixtures in warm bronze or gold add a touch of elegance and will stand the test of emerging design trends. Choose sleek, contemporary designs with clean lines and ensure faucets, including shower heads and bath taps, match to create a cohesive look.
Avoid matching the towel rails, hooks and towel radiators as there can be too much of a good thing. Contrast these fixtures with a finish such as matte black.
The bath
The feature bath should be a statement piece. Freestanding baths with contemporary sculptural designs are ideal. Consider materials such as stone resin or acrylic for durability and heat retention. Position the bath to maximise its visual impact.
A floor-standing tap or a wall spout adds luxury.
Mirrors
Mirrors enhance the sense of space and reflect light – position them to reflect natural light and add depth to the room. A large, frameless mirror above the sink is a must.
Lighting
Good lighting adds to the luxury feel. Combine ambient, task, and accent lighting. Use dimmable LED lights to create a relaxing atmosphere but powerful enough to give you a studio look when getting ready. Backlit mirrors and LED strips under wall-hung fixtures create an ambient glow and sense of space.
Place lighting above the mirror to avoid shadowing on your face. Install face-level lighting that can be switched on for makeup application.
Storage
Clutter can ruin the aesthetic of a contemporary bathroom. Incorporate built-in storage solutions, such as recessed shelves in the shower, wall niches and vanity units with hidden compartments.
Install a wall-hung storage unit the same size as your wall-hung sink. Leave a 300mm gap between the two pieces and for a clutter-free look, and add a shaver and/or toothbrush charger on top or within the unit.
Heating & Ventilation
For added comfort and luxury, install underfloor heating, and an extractor fan that operates quietly but is powerful enough to avoid steamy walls.
