Portmeirion in top 10 Instagram roadtrip list
Magical Portmeirion, vision and life’s work of the architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, has come runner-up in a national poll on the most Instagrammable UK road trip destinations. The setting on the estuary of the River Dwyryd, and its transformation from a wilderness to a site befitting the Italian Riviera put it just behind the Cornish village of Polperro in the influencers’ survey by Click4reg Private Plates.
Portmeirion, made famous by the cult 1960s TV drama The Prisoner, and its celebrity connections including the fact that Noel Coward wrote Blithe Spirit while staying at the Hotel Portmeirion in 1941 has a central piazza, a Gothic pavilion, ornamental garden, and campanile. There is exotic woodland, a Gothic mansion called Castell Deudrath, a stop on the Ffestiniog Railway just a mile away, and a quayside that is an Instagrammer’s dream.

British road trips are growing in popularity as foreign holiday hotspots are being added to the UK’s list of quarantine countries, says Click4reg, which surveyed 1,200 travel Instagrammers to discover which areas of the UK they would most like to visit or have already visited for a photo to add to their feed. Portmeirion joins Polperro, and Chipping Campden in the Cotswolds, as the favourite villages for a road trip. Other top ten destinations in the survey include Tintagel Castle on the Atlantic Highway in North Cornwall, Dark Hedges in Northern Ireland – a filming location in Game of Thrones, Jedburgh Abbey in Scotland, and Aysgarth Falls in Yorkshire.

Portmeirion Village is open every day from 9.30am to 5.30pm. The main shops are open as well as cafes and coffee shops for take-away meals. Table-service lunches are available at Castell Deudraeth (12pm to 2.30pm). Please pre-book on 01766 772400. The Hotel Terrace menu is available Monday to Saturday (weather dependent). The Hotel and Castell Deudraeth hotels opened on 3rd August. All the Self-Catering cottages are open.
