The Lord Mayor of Norwich tells us about the most important date in her calendar
Lord Mayor of Norwich Brenda Arthur will be leading the Lord Mayor’s Procession through the city centre on Saturday, July 4. The colourful parade rolls, dances, stilt-walks, back-flips and blares through the streets in a carnival of fun. And it is just part of a whole weekend of celebrations across the city. Brenda has been involved in community life in Norwich for decades, including working as a volunteer with children’s groups and older people. She hopes to be accompanied in the procession by all five of her grandchildren, ranging from teenagers to four-year-old twins.
“I have watched it, I have helped decorate floats, I have been on floats. It’s an amazing spectacle and quite emotional! I was Sheriff of Norwich 10 years ago and walked at the head of the procession. I can remember just being overwhelmed at the number of people lining the streets. And I was a judge last year and saw it all. The celebration weekend as a whole is just incredible. I think it’s really important that the city is able to stage this kind of free event which everyone can enjoy. There is a buzz around the whole city. It’s great for people to be able to take part and use their skills to create floats, or be in one of the children’s walking groups, or part of the crowd appreciating the floats and the costumes and the music. It’s all about people working together and having fun. Norwich really knows how to party!”
