A stunning historic home at Clitheroe that has been painstakingly renovated and modernised

THE VENDOR SAYS:

Can you tell us about the history of the house?

Primrose House dates back to 1795. In 1825, it was expanded in the Georgian style and the kitchen still features the original stone cooking areas. The Georgian extensions were added from 1808 by James Thomson, a relative of Bury-born Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel.

How long have you lived here?

We've been here for more than 27 years.

What drew you to this house?

We were captivated by its classic Georgian high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows, opening to lush gardens. Its very private and secluded, yet accessible, location with private gardens, a trout river and woodland, was a significant draw. Moving from Virginia Water for a job, we found the historic and rural charm of Ribble Valley irresistible.

What renovations have you made?

The house was in disrepair when we bought it. We've meticulously restored each room, preserving the Georgian elegance. Additions include a sunroom, gym, Jacuzzi room, home office, and garden remodelling with a central reflecting pool.

What will you miss the most?

Primrose House is more than a historic building; it's a tranquil sanctuary with a deep connection to nature. It's been adapted for modern living, offering varied spaces for solitude, or gathering. We'll cherish memories of family Christmases, our dogs, a special wedding and the birth of our granddaughter.

Describe the garden.

Initially overgrown, we've transformed it into a stunning landscape. We maintained the original beech, lime, and chestnut trees framing the view from the house. The garden now features stone terraces, level lawns, and an 18-meter-long stone-edged pond that brightens even the gloomiest days. The pond, woodland and river attract diverse wildlife, making every season in the garden a unique experience.
