When you’re by the coast or out and about in Suffolk nothing beats traditional fish and chips. A large battered cod, crunchy fried chips with lots of salt and vinegar and of course a side of mushy peas and curry sauce.

Here are 15 of our favourite places to try tasty fish and chips in Suffolk:


1) The Little Fish and Chip Shop, Southwold

Standing proud with its eye-catching blue and white façade The Little Fish and Chip Shop in Southwold is beloved by the local community as one of the best 'chippies' in the area.

Having fresh fish delivered daily, as well as an enviable seaside location, this is an ideal place for fish and chips any day of the week, whether you're eating in or taking away. Treat yourself to some freshly fried crispy chips with a delicious large battered cod and a selection of tasty extras.


2) The Regal Fish Bar, Felixstowe

Found on the Felixstowe seafront, The Regal Fish Bar is a charming family-run restaurant that doubles as a fish & chips takeaway. With friendly service and a cheerful atmosphere, The Regal has built a loyal following from the local community who hail it as one of the finest fish and chip shops in Felixstowe.

All of their fish is cooked to order from fresh and for those in need of a tasty treat; their chips are fried in beef dripping.


3) Sole Bay Fish Company, Southwold

The Sole Bay Fish Company is a charming family-run fishmongers and restaurant on the harbour-side in Southwold. There is a huge selection of wonderful seafood dishes to choose from on the menu from mixed platters to oysters and lobster.

The traditional cod and chips, at £12, is fried in homemade batter and served with chunky chips, mushy peas and homemade tartare sauce. The restaurant's relaxed atmosphere is perfect for families and couples looking for a delicious meal any time of day.


4) Mrs T's, Southwold

Mrs T's in Southwold is a favourite among locals for their traditional fish and chips. With all of the food being cooked fresh to order there will often be a short wait for the food but it is always worth it. Their cod is second-to-none, served in a light, crunchy golden batter with wonderfully crispy chips.

Set in an old boat house means it's not the most glamorous of places but all of this just adds to the charm making it the perfect atmosphere for a traditional chippy. Be warned, the opening or "frying" times for Mrs T's can be limited and change often so it's always best to keep up to date with them via their Facebook page.


5) Pakefield Plaice, Felixstowe

Just a stone's throw from the beach at Pakefield, this is a popular fish and chip shop with both locals and visitors for very good reasons. Drop in and see for yourself, but be sure to call ahead to beat the queue!


6) The Codfather, Sudbury

Local Sudbury chippy The Codfather was the first fish and chip in the area to be recognised with a quality award.

Serving large portions of wonderfully fresh fish at reasonable prices has garnered The Codfather a great reputation locally. Diners can either get their meal to takeaway or eat in the recently acquired restaurant next door.


7) Perry's Fish and Chips, Lowestoft

Perry's Fish and Chips in Lowestoft strive to serve their customers the best fish and chips around at fantastic prices.

Find a seat in the restaurant and tuck into fresh battered fish with chips made from local spuds with a side of mushy peas and buttered bread. Wonderful!


8) Miller's Fish and Chips, Ipswich

Miller's Fish and Chips is a family run, independent chip shop in Ipswich.

They serve fantastic food at great prices with friendly service and have the quality awards to prove it. They only source their fish from sustainable fishing sources and their potatoes are bought locally as often as possible.


9) The Golden Galleon, Aldeburgh

A sister restaurant to Aldeburgh's Little Fish and Chip Shop, The Golden Galleon serves the same delicious lightly battered fish and crispy chips and enjoys a seafront view.

The food is cooked fresh to order and diners can feel free to takeaway and enjoy them on the seafront or pay a visit to the upstairs restaurant, The Upper Deck, perfect for escaping the cold on a miserable day.


10) Seashell, Halesworth

Seashell in Halesworth may not be on the coast but that doesn't seem to stop it form serving up wonderfully fresh fish that the local community can't seem to get enough of.

Their huge portions of cod come with light, crunchy batter and a generous portion of chips. The atmosphere is always friendly and welcoming; diners are free to takeaway or enjoy their meal in the little restaurant.


11) Fish Dish, Felixstowe

Voted as one of the 10 best fish and chip shops in the country by Fry Magazine in 2017, this restaurant and takeaway certainly has a fine pedigree.

That pedigree is incredibly well-earned as each of the dishes they offer - not just the usual cod and haddock but also rock eel, salmon, sole and plaice - is perfect whether you're in a rush and have to take your chippy away or if you sit in and enjoy the gorgeous views from the restaurant.


12) Bury Fish & Chip Shop, Bury St Edmunds

Located just around the corner from Moyse's Hall Museum and The Apex, Bury Fish & Chip Shop is perfectly placed in the thick of this market town for you to drop into following an afternoon exploring the area.

Ownership of the chippy has recently changed hands and the early signs are promising with some even saying that it's the best fish and chips in town.


13) The Golden Chip, Bury St Edmunds

One place that will certainly contend for the title of best fish and chips in Bury St Edmunds is The Golden Chip on Saint John's Street. New owner Som Parnell puts an enormous emphasis on their produce and they want every single customer to say their food was delicious.


14) Cumberland Fish Bar, Woodbridge

Based on Cumberland Street, this fish bar will be your go-to chippy once you've visited the Tide Mill and taken a walk out along the River Deben perhaps to Kyson Hill.

On a nice warm day you'll be able to sit outside the shop and enjoy your fish dish while life in this pretty riverside town goes on all around you.


15) The Cod House, Beccles

The Cod House has now been trading in Beccles for over a decade and is very well established as a firm local favourite producing quality fish and chips every time.

Situated on Ravensmere, your eye will immediately be drawn in by their distinctive orange sign. Once you're inside you'll be able to choose from the usual cod or haddock, bite-sized cod pieces, skate and plaice.


16) Aldeburgh Fish and Chip Shop, Aldeburgh

Legend has it that the Aldeburgh Fish and Chip Shop is one of the greatest fish and chip shops in the entire country. Whether this is true or not, it can't be denied that they do serve a glorious cod and chips, so glorious in fact, that they haven't had to change a thing about it since they started back in 1967!

Treat yourself to some fresh Suffolk coast fish, and delicious golden chips - made from local potatoes - and see if the legends are true.


17) Hamilton Fish and Chips, Felixstowe

Hamilton Fish and Chips is a very popular high-street takeaway, with friendly staff and a good selection of freshly cooked fish, what else could you ask for? Oh and there's also scampi, burgers, pies and sausages to sate your hunger.
